So Charming

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Here’s a couple of new charm necklaces I’ve made recently. I’m enjoying mixing altered and soldered game pieces and charms together.

The first one is sort of a pun, it’s a skeleton key necklace. A large metal key with a skull charm and a soldered domino charm with dancing skeletons.

This one is all Alice, a tiny glass bottle filled with blue beads and three soldered game charms, a domino with Alice on a blue background, an “A” scrabble tile with vintage “Alice” text and a vintage bingo tile with vintage “drink me” text.

These are both currently available in my Etsy shop, click here to visit.

More from Wonderland

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Ok, I also can’t seem to stop making things with Alice in Wonderland either 🙂 I’ve been making Alice jewelry and collages for years now and am happy to see a big jump in popularity because of the new Burton movie. Somerset Studio even did another issue with lots of  wonderful Alice art, the first Alice issue some years back is still one of my favorites and I still have my dog-eared copy.

Here’s a picture of all of the Wonderland character soldered domino charms I posted about recently:

and here’s a domino ring I made with Alice:

and here’s my favorite, a charm bracelet. It has charms made with shrink plastic, soldered wooden game pieces, a tiny glass bottle, soldered dominoes, vintage King and Queen puzzle pieces, vintage text and silver charms.

Fly Free

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

I just can’t seem to stop making things with birds 🙂 Here are a couple of new mixed media necklaces I made last week.

I enjoyed making my Alice in Wonderland Domino charms so much I used a larger domino, inked it blue and stamped a really cool flying bird on it and then soldered around the edges, adding two sets of jump rings to the top to hang from the ball chain. I also adhered a glass rhinestone to the front for a little added bling:

I also made this necklace with a pretty silver bird charm and a tiny soldered word charm that says “fly away” on vintage music paper, also on a ball chain:

Critters

I recently went to a wonderful large antique show with a friend (who bought a super cool vintage Ouija board) and found a couple of really cute children’s books from the 60’s. People are always asking me where I find the book I use for my art work and my best recommendations are used book shops and antique shows, you can usually find some really great books, vintage photos, postcards, music sheets, etc.

Here’s a couple of soldered pendants I made using some illustrations from one of those books.

A tiny cute squirrel, the back says “oh nuts”:

A sweet fawn, the back says “oh deer”:

a sly little fox, the back says “foxy”:

Playing Games in Wonderland

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

While digging through one of my many drawers filled with supplies, embellishments, etc. I came across a small box of tiny dominos I’d forgotten about and thought “I need to do something with these” and so I did:) I’ve made domino pins in the past but thought these were too tiny and would make a better charm so I decided to add my love of soldering to them and made some cute soldered domino charms.  The fronts are inked and stamped and then the edges are soldered with a jump ring on top. They only measure 1″ x 1/2″ and I think they are adorable. Right now I’ve only done some Alice in Wonderland characters but will probably try some other images soon.

Spread Your Wings and Sing

Friday, March 19th, 2010

My obsession with birds continues. Here are two of my favorite pendants I’ve made in awhile. I made tiny inchie ( 1″)  bird collages on vintage paper and added text from vintage books, encased them in glass, soldered around the edges and then added metal corner embellishments to the tops for a scallop roof to form tiny bird houses. So happy with these 🙂

They are both currently available in my Etsy shop, click here.

Vintage Flash Card Pendants

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

In an effort to keep myself busy these last few weeks (after the loss of our sweet dog Jesse) I’ve been making loads of soldered pendants. I have this wonderful vintage dictionary with lots of fantastic illustrations and had been wanting to make some soldered pendants with them but was unsure what I wanted on the back side. I’ve been seeing alot of cool art lately using vintage flash cards and a light bulb went off in my head to make these pendants look a bit like an old fashioned flash card, so the front has the illustration and the back of each contains a letter and text cut from the dictionary and other vintage books that say ” C is for cat”, etc. I thought a black patina added to the solder framed them nicely and made them look more vintage-y. I’ve done some “mundane” one’s like the cat, squirrel and birds but also some really cool funky one’s like wombat, narwhal, squid and anteater, these unusual ones are my favorites! I am slowing adding them to my Etsy shop and I also have more illustrations to go through, if there is an animal (like a goat or elephant?) you’d like please feel free to ask me, maybe I have it and I’d be happy to make a pendant for you.

Almost Antiques

Friday, February 12th, 2010

One of the great old children’s books I got recently was in really bad shape, pages torn, falling apart and crumbling but it wasn’t surprising considering the book was dated 1918, it’s almost 100 years old! It has some simply gorgeous illustrations in it, lots of cute animals reading books and fairies in flowers, they are simply lovely! Here are a few soldered pendants I’ve made with some of the illustrations.

An adorable frog on a lily pad reading:

A trio of birds reading / singing:

A sweet bunny rabbit reading, I love the little bird perched on the top of the book:

a dandy black crow all dressed up and strutting around (I added a black patina to the solder on this one):

a dapper fairy sitting in a morning glory (this one is going to my mom for her birthday, she loves fairies and is a world class gardener)

The Solder’s been Flowin’

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I recently found a couple more gorgeous vintage children’s books, one was in pretty bad shape and that makes it easier to cut it up:) They both have some wonderful illustrations that I’m turning into soldered pendants. Here’s a few I’ve made so far.

This first one I really love, the white cow is so sweet but mostly because I feel so clever with what I put on the back side:

This next one is a sweet Momma Cat and her kittens:

A birds nest and bird flying away (love this one!):

and this one is a child riding a horse under a full moon, really neat:

All these pendants are currently for sale here in my Etsy shop. And I’ll be adding even more in the next few days.
