On my recent shopping spree at my local stained glass store I also picked up some tiny squares of beveled glass, they are flat on one side and beveled on the other and come in all different shapes sizes. I got some 3/4″ x 3/4″ squares and made myself a monogram necklace with them. I used the letter “H” from an old children’s book of nursery rhymes on one side and a piece of vintage music sheet on the other. FYI: If you decide to give these a try yourself you will probably need wider copper tape than you do for microscope slides as the glass on these is much thicker.

Fairy Specimen Box
December 1st, 2008I wanted to take a break from jewelry and made this cool specimen box with a fairy inside. I took a wooden box and painted it blue, then covered it in Tim Holtz’ crackle paint, dried it and then added some of his inks to age it up. I made a collage of a fairy with a vintage image of a little girl, added wings and a fairy want to her and mounted her in the box (she stands out from the box a bit. I glued fake “grass” at her feet and cut off a piece of old wooden yard stick and attached it to the box along with an old look key and tag tied with w ribbon. The tag say “Found Object Official Investigator” . I love the way it turned out!
Two of a Kind
November 29th, 2008I’ve started to cut my pieces of glass for my collage jewelry into smaller pieces and stringing two tiny collages onto one chain. I really like the look and the challenge of making teeny tiny collages is alot of fun!
This first piece features a very unhappy looking young man in a big pink party hat along with another charm that says “laugh”. I used my new scalloped edge tape on the charm with the boy. The words and background are all vintage papers.
This next one is two tiny 1″x1″ collages of fairy sisters with vintage French paper backgrounds and words that say “Flutter” and “Fly”. I added a string of pretty purple and blue beads to the top of one of the charms so when they hang you’ll be able to see both fairies.
I’ve mentioned this before but recently I’ve gotten alot of questions about where I get my vintage papers. I get almost all my vintage papers at used book shops, luckily my local area has some really nice ones. You can find music sheets, old children’s books, foreign language books and lots more with just a little bit of hunting. If you have a used book store go check them out, you’ll be amazed at all the cool stuff you’ll find! And maybe pick up a good old novel to read while you’re there:)

Whooo?
November 24th, 2008A Scalloped Edge
November 22nd, 2008I recently got some way cool copper foil tape for soldering that has a scalloped edge. It’s really fun to use and gives a very unique look to soldered pieces. Here are the first two things I’ve done with it.
The first features a gold finch bird from an old firld guide in a crown I free hand cut from some gold metallic paper, he’s on a piece of vintage music sheet and I added the word “fly” cut from an old book.
The next is an adorable image of a little girl with her arms crossed and a very grumpy look on her face. I added some wings to her and the words “What Attitude?”, I think she turned out so cute and funny.
Pop a Top
November 21st, 2008I had some unused bottle caps in my drawers of “stuff” and thought I’d make some magnets with them. I used a circle punch and punched out some circles from old french book pages and also some faces of some cute vintage little girls, I inked the edges and collaged them together, adding some different words cute from books to describe each one. I filled them with dimensional liquid and while it was still wet added some regular glitter and some clear glass glitter to add some sparkle. I then attached magnets on the back.
Tiny Santa Collage
November 13th, 2008I found some really cool small canvases at my local art store. They had some that were the same size as an ATC (3 1/2″x 2 1/2″) so I used one for this collage. I took an image of Santa from an old postcard and mounted him to some music sheet and then layered it with cardstock, cutting the edges to make it look like a postage stamp. I used Tim Holtz crackle paint (love the stuff!) and ink for the background. I stamped cancellation and date marks on it with Staz-On ink. I had an old wooden game piece that had the number 25 on it, so I soldered around it and added it to the piece. The edges of the piece are wrapped with ribbon so it doesn’t need to be framed.
Hanging Holiday ATC’s
November 12th, 2008I made some ATC (Artist Trading Cards) today for the holidays and decided to add some ribbon to the tops of them so they could be hung on the tree or on a gift.
The first one has stamping on it, it’s a cute little snowman on a hill surrounded by trees and falling snow. There’s lots of glitter and a snowflake charm (from Close To My Heart) as well. I sewed the layers of paper together on my sewing machine.
The next one is a beautiful vintage image of a little girl that I turned into an angel. I free hand cut some wings for her from some cool gold vellum and layered her onto some vintage sheet music. The letters for JOY were cut from an old book and there are also some glittery gold stars around her head.
The last one is a vintage image of three adorable siblings standing in a row and I added Santa hats to each of them. The background is vintage sheet music and there is a date stamped for 12/25/2008 along with black alphabet beads that say “Merry”.
I love the idea of using ATC’s for things other than just collecting, like hanging somewhere around the house, a book mark, gift tag or in a tiny frame.
