Mermaid and Shells Collage

I’ve been holding on to a bunch a sea shells from a trip to Florida years ago and now I know why I saved them! I stamped the mermaid image from “Stampendous” and colored it with Spectrum Noir markers and added glitter to her tail with a clear Starburst gel marker from Sakura. I adhered vintage map pattern paper from CTMH on a 5″ x 7″ canvas board and inked the edges with a sponge and brown stamping ink and then layered the mermaid image on top. Then using a strong clear glue I added the shells around the edges along with a brass star fish charm and also added some real beach sand under her with the same glue. I laid out my shells before I glued them down to make sure they looked nice and would fit. I also added a snippet of text cut from a vintage book that says “Under the Sea”. I think she turned out really lovely.

This piece is currently for sale in my Etsy shop.

A Mermaid’s Tale

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

Continuing with an ocean theme, I made this mermaid collage. I’ve done lots of collage art with fairies inside jars and I thought why not a mermaid? So I turned the jar on it’s side and put actual sand in the bottom. I also added a background of vintage inspired map paper, a label, some actual small sea shells and a real working compass. Then I wrapped the entire canvas in some netting. I love how it turned out. I need to think of more things to capture in jars 🙂

I’d Like to be Under the Sea…..

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

It felt so good to stamp today! After spending 6 long weeks recovering from surgery it felt so good to sit down and be creative!

I needed to make a couple of birthday cards and the one I made for my mother in law (who loves the sea and anything nautical) fit perfectly with the latest Lawnscaping challenge Stamp a Scene . All the stamps are from Lawn Fawn’s Critters of the Sea set and all the pattern papers are from My Mind’s Eye.

Naturally

Here’s a few soldered glass pendants I did this week, each  with a nature theme.

This one is an illustration from a vintage children’s book from 1929, it’s a sweet girl kneeling in the water at the ocean’s edge and she’s holding up a star fish, I added the words “mermaid dreams” cut from a vintage dictionary.

This one is also from a vintage children’s book, it’s a fawn running through the forest and I added the words “Oh, deer”.

This last one is a illustration from a really cool nature book from 1934, it’s a spiders web in a meadow, there’s even a tiny spider in the web, I think it’s a really unique and lovely illustration.

At the Beach

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

My mom recently came back from Florida (were she was born) and brought back some really neat tiny sea shells and ask if I wanted some for my artwork and of course I did:) I used them in this fun little collage of a mermaid laying on the beach. I love mermaids almost as much as I do fairies:) I took a vintage image of a lady in a swimsuit and cut off her legs and added the tail of a fish from a vintage nature book, they didn’t really “match” so I wrapped some rickrack around her waist and it helped to tie the two halves of her together (sounds like Dr. Frankenstein or something, hehe) I inked up the small canvas (which is 3 3/4″ 2  3/4″) with various shades of blues, greens and yellows and wrapped yellow grosgrain ribbon around the edges to hide the staples. I tore and sanded cardstock for the beach, attached the mermaid and then added real sand mixed with Tim Holtz’s glitter glue for a very realistic looking beach. I then added those great shells from my mom and stamped and cut out a plaque and added the words “A day at the beach” cut from a vintage book. Makes me wish I was at the beach!
