A Bevy of Buttons

I love using vintage buttons in my jewelry and collage, especially white mother of pearl, so pretty! Here’s a grouping of jewelry and a collage I’ve made using buttons. Everything shown is currently in my Etsy shop.

I’m melting………..

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Melting wax that is. I decided I hadn’t played with bees wax for awhile so I got my little crock pot out and played around with it the other day. I made some more captured fairy in a jar art cards, like I did in the past, dipping the collaged jars into the bees wax, they always turn out cute. I also did a bird collage I’m really happy with. I started with a wooden tag and collaged vintage music sheet and images of a bird and egg and the word “fly” cut from a vintage book. Then I took a brush and covered the tag with the melted wax. One of the cool things about wax is it can be remelted. So in a couple spots were it was too thick and cloudy I used my heat tool and melted it a bit to thin it out. You can also use a mini iron to melt the wax as well. I then added some game pieces that spell “egg” and faux grass for a nest. I covered a 5 x 7 canvas board in vintage dictionary paper, mounted the tag in the middle on cardstock and then added a few vintage buttons.

Here’s a couple of my fairy art cards:

Button Up My Heart

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

So, I love old buttons and have used some in soldered jewelry but was wanting to making something “more” with them. I remembered a piece I saw awhile ago from the great Rebbecca Sower and also some pieces I’ve seen on Etsy and I was inspired to make this piece. I had some extra burlap from another project and loads of vintage white buttons so I drew a heart onto the burlap and stitched on all the buttons filling in the heart. And since I love adding little cut out words to just about everything I added the word “love” to one of the buttons. I bought an embroidery hoop and stained it with some wood stain (I have some vintage hoops packed away some place from my cross stitch days and need to find them, they’d be great in a piece like this) and then I put the burlap in the hoop, trimmed it down and glued it to the back. I think it turned out really lovely.

Wish Fairy

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I love working on canvas board for my collages as opposed to a stretched canvas over a wooden frame because there is no “sag” in the middle and they are a little less expensive, which is always a good thing:)

For this collage I started out with a 5″x7″ canvas board and inked the edges in a brown ink. Then I tore a page out of a vintage children’s book (a story about Hansel and Gretel) and inked those edges, then using gesso I white washed the page as well and adhered it to the canvas with gel medium. I cut out an image of a mushroom and adhered it to the canvas and then cut out a scalloped border from polka dotted scrapbooking paper, inked the edges and applied it to the bottom. I cut out an image of a sitting woman, added wings to her and then adhered her on top of the mushroom. I cut out a crown and the words “My first wish is” from the same book, inked the edges and adhered them. I then sealed it all with gel medium and added two vintage buttons, that still have thread in them, to the piece with some melted beeswax.  I’m super happy with the results.
